The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola). The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. After doing some basic research, I found out that a Moto dealer programmed a special. Right now I am using the xpr6550 with the LTR trunking board installed and perhaps if my option board is the same size and compatible for the 7550. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. I am thinking about purchasing the xpr7550 handheld analog/digital radio. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming.

Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). For the sake of security, let's pretend the frequencies we are using on the repeater and radios are in the GMRS band. To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum. I'm attempting to program several Motorola MOTOTRBO XPR-7550 radios to work with our very old Kenwood TKR-820 repeater.
